The other evening, I (finally) took Emily to the ice cream shop to redeem a birthday certificate she received. In that moment, she experienced a severe case of indecision. Funny how, when I buy her an ice cream cone, she doesn't seem to struggle so much with her choice. But I think that because it was her own purchase, she felt pressure to make it really count.
Anyway, while Emily paced back and forth, studying the 31 flavors before her, the girl behind the counter got bored, I guess. Or maybe just hungry. I watched curiously as she took a small pink sample spoon, scooped out a bite-size chunk of ice cream (Gold Medal Ribbon?) and popped it in her own mouth! I wonder if my surprise showed on my face. Do you think that's as funny as I think it is?
Well, at least she didn't double dip.
One time I was at another of my favorite ice cream counters in SoCal with my sister-in-law, Melaina. She asked for a sample of something, which the attendant gave her. Melaina was still undecided, so she asked for a taste of a different flavor. The attendant answered, "Sure. Same spoon?" and reached for the little sample spoon Melaina was still holding. It took both of us by surprise to see the ice cream girl stick the spoon that Melaina had licked into the tub of ice cream and hand her another sample with it. After we got over our shock, we couldn't stop giggling. Yes, it was disturbing, but mostly, it was hilarious.
The most disturbing image burned into my brain, though, is of the little frozen yogurt shop I worked at as a teenager. First of all, I always ran the shop alone--even closing up at night, and all. How scary is that? But thankfully, I suppose, the biggest threat I faced working in that shop was an army of cockroaches. DEE-SKUSTING. I saw them on the floor, on the side of the yogurt machine, and - worst of all - in the bowls of toppings. Which is why I never snuck any of those and popped them into my mouth, with customers watching, or without.
Good news: I guess I can assume that my local ice cream shop doesn't have cockroaches, or if they do, their teenage employee has never seen any. Cuz she still eats the product.
P.S. My all-time favorite of the 31 flavors is World Class Chocolate. But Emily and I have now discovered the goodness that is called "Baseball Nut." You should try it sometime.
What's your fave?

Maybe she was hoping Emily would think, "that flavor must be GREAT if she can't resist eating it in front of us! Scoop me a triple!"
I'm a mint chip girl, myself. But the chocolate has to be shaved. (I'm an ice cream snob sometimes).
Okay, I'm totally grossed out. Do they let everyone "double dip"? And COCKROACHES!!! I can't even think about my favorite flavor right now. I'm sick to my stomach after reading that.-Kaelyn
You mean you served customers toppings that you had seen cockroaches in???? Ick.
I love Butter Pecan. But to answer your question on my blog, I definitely think that 6 months is too early to expect crawling. I just feel like since I messed up so bad with Cole and crawling, I need to start working on it with Luke extra early.
I guess I am getting old because all I want is a chocolate yogurt cone, but since I read your blog about cockroaches I really don't feel liking going out for yogurt anymore!
Okay so I am laughing so hard. I am thinking that the owners of Cookies to Go brought the cockroaches in their "dee-skusting" blue station wagon in hopes that we their employees would not eat any of their profit. They were so cheap!!!!
I just saw your blog on Meredeth's blog site. I have to say, it is soooo fun to read your descriptions of interactions with your girls. Aren't girls fun? Expecially in large numbers!!!
Mmmmmm...yea for Baskin Robbins! :) Thats cute that Emily had a hard time making her decision...I am the same way! I love mint chocolate chip from Baskin Robbins...although I can really eat any chocolate one and be happy! When I was little though..it was all about the bubblegum ice cream! How come it was so much fun to get the little pieces of gum in your ice cream? :) And that is completely disgusting about the cockroaches. did they not spray for bugs or what? Ewwww.
Rebecca, Im laughing, mostly because I can top that story. I wanted to taste my sisters ice cream before I decided on what I ordered so I did, then I tasted my other sisters, then I read the bin I had gotten my little spoon from and it read "already loved ice cream spoons" yeah, it took me a minute to realize that it meant those were the discarded spoons from previous customers!!!! Thats the story of my life, Im a little slow.
I haven't looked at your blog in a long time, thanks for some good giggles!
